What to Lookout For [Type]
As you can see above. Different bowls are design for different pets as it serve different purposes. Compare to dogs which has a longer snout and cats have a flat face as u can see below.
For cats, it is preferred to have a wide and shallow bowl. Or simply use a metal plate dish like the one i use above. Because cat whiskers are sensitive
and having a narrow opening food bowl that have dept to it might discourage your cat from eating.
So how about a wide bowl with dept [Water Bowl as seen above]? This my friend, I use it as a water bowl instead of a food bowl. Let be honest here. As much as we love our cats our lives cannot revolve around just topping up water over and over again in a day. There must be more to LIFE then this.
For me, this bowl have a good amount of dept where I need to change my cat water on every meal time or at least twice daily.

What About Material?
Now we know about the type of bowls to lookout for. So what about the type of materials that we should lookout for in a cat food bowl? There are plastic, glass, ceramic and metal bowls.
The one that I advise that you should stay away from are the plastic bowls. Plastic bowls might cause feline acne under the chin. Once again discouraging your cats from easting due to discomfort. And also plastic bowl might harbor bacteria due to micro scaring during cleaning. I use to have a water bowl that turn dirty when dry. For example sake I will be using this water scooper as a demonstration. As you can see, every time the plastic scooper is dry it will have all this dirt embedded in it. And it will disappear once water is pour into it. Honestly i feel it is very unhygienic and disgusting to feed my cat food or water in such bowls |
As for Glass and Ceramic it could be a bit fragile compare to metal. If you have kids or cats that love the zoomies, better not use this ones. The last thing we want is for someone, humans or cats to knock into it causing breakages and cuts.
But between these 3; glass, ceramic and metal. You might need to give it a bit of time to try and test on which one work best for your cats. As some cats might not like the feel of such material. For example, licking on a metal bowl might give that metallic feel and taste. While eating on a glass bowl might distract the cat to play on their food instead of eating, due to the transparency nature of the material.
If you are still confuse on which bowl to try, then i suggest that you start with a metal bowl. As it it more durable, scratch and bacteria resistant. And most importantly it is mostly preferred by cats.

Pro Tip
When buying a food bowl for your cats always get the ones with the anti-slip base. May it be a silicone base or rubber feet. This will really save you a few time and money from buying and cleaning a separate rubber mat.
Just So you know those bowls that comes with an anti-slip base unfortunately might develop molds over time. |
